Standardised writing assessments can be particularly challenging for students who have difficulty with written expression, including those with learning disabilities, English language learners, and students who have had limited experience with writing.

Perhaps standardised assessments can now be “Open Book, Open AI” exams, with the questions asked requiring much more analysis and original thought.

The popularity of ChatGPT since its launch has been met with alarm, including from some US schools who have blocked it on their servers in a bid to prevent students from cheating. Others worry the bot will take jobs away from writers and creatives, or will be used for more sinister purposes by hackers to write harmful malware.

It is now, more important than anytime in history, to develop a person’s character; their values and beliefs so they can make effective ethical decisions as we try to keep up with the accelerating changes AI will bring.

What if we started not with addition, but with subtraction? Make school simpler. Give teachers and students room to breathe. Clear out the marginal and focus on the most important things. When people feel a little lighter, then figure out what your schools are missing and what to strategically add to make them stronger.
